俗話說「百善孝為先」，孝順這件是在華語社會中，擁有不可取代的地位，因此也衍生出不少民間俗語，好比「久病床前無孝子」這句話，就是講述父母病重臥床時間太久，再孝順、再好的子女都會有厭煩的時候，但是你知道嗎？原來這句俗語還有下一句，甚至更加悲哀。

「久病床前無孝子」後一句為「久貧家中無賢妻」，意思是一個家庭長時間貧困潦倒，這個家庭的妻子就不再賢慧，因為什麼事情都需要用錢，沒有錢的話還談什麼賢慧？此外，倘若經濟拮据，吃穿用度就顯得寒酸卑微遭人歧視，妻子肯定會感到心痛。這也透露現實生活中很多事都跟錢扯上關係，正好呼應「夫妻本是同林鳥，大難臨頭各自飛」，沒有麵包的愛情的確難以維持。

這2句警世俗語直截了當點出現實的人情世故，雖然非常殘酷，但如果從另一個角度思考，相信沒有一個子女會希望父母久病卻無法痊癒，妻子更不可能想要一直待在窮苦的家中，所以會挺身而出採取下一步行動，尤其現在也不是主張「男主外、女主內」的時代了，「妻子一定要賢慧」的觀念，早已慢慢有所改變了。
